Final Days

We enjoyed our Easter holiday with the family, but I think in the future we are going to ask them to visit a month or two later so they can enjoy good weather. They aren't religious so I don't see what the big deal about being here on Easter is. None of them joined us at church. Which is fine, but the weather will be so much nicer in May and early June.

Jon and I are making plans of our own for a nice little trip. We are finally going to make it to NYC in mid May. We got back into contact with some old friends and they invited us to stay with them in their spacious Brooklyn apartment. It will be nice to see them and other. I hope to make it to Etsy labs once, or at least see Anda from Etsy. I'm dying to meet her daughter!

The collage a day for a week went so well that I am doing it again, but with less restrictions. I just need to do some art daily. Yesterday it was a collage, today I'm not sure. I have a woodblock drawn on and ready to carve. It is quite small, but that is a good place to start.

Hope everybody has a great Wednesday. I miss the old days of blogging and reading blogs daily. I miss everybody.

Printsy : Printmakers of Etsy

Something that I have been thinking about but never getting off my butt to do for about oh two years now has finally happened. Printmakers on Etsy finally have their own street team named Printsy. I came up with that one half as a joke and it took.

Are you a printmaker that sells your prints on Etsy? Would you like to get together with other printmakers to get the word out about original prints versus reproductions? Help show that there very much is a difference between the two and that they can co-exist. Then please consider joining our group.

You can contact me or sherisdesthelion via Etsy convo to find out more information about this growing group of artists.

Join up in the Flickr group Flickr Group and find out more about the intent of the group.

Get your own Etsy shop or blog linked on the Printsy Blog, as well as make your own posts. You will want to contact Sheridesthelion who runs the blog.

This is a group that is about promotion printmaking beyond our own individual prints.

Ok it isn't 9pm even but I am exhausted and am going to head off to bed. I have a busy morning tomorrow and I need to be well rested. Jon is out visiting a friend until later tonight and I don't have the energy to do anymore carving, but I am getting close to finishing that block I started last week.

Friday Feature

Yes! I am an artist!

First things first.

Matt from mincing mockingbird is awesome and makes magnets so tempting that I had to buy a six pack of them because I just couldn't settle on one or two. And I make my own magnets so this is quite a feat. It is hard to pick a favorite, but the one pictured here certainly makes me giggle in an inside arty joke kind of way.

I could totally picture this shop as an Etsy featured seller shop. Great unique products, photos and hilarious listings combined with perfect feedback.

And I do smell nice!

So much is going on all the time that there is no way that I can record it all, even if I had more time for blogging. My moods vary tremendously lately from tons of positive productive energy to a pretty deep sadness. I have so much weighing on my mind and pulling me all over all the time. It is too early to say what today will be.

And I miss my little sister something fierce. I hope when she is older her parents will let her come out to stay with us by herself. We would have so much fun and I know that blee would enjoy an extended period of quality time with her auntie Sara.

all snug and ready for a night out

This is what a two month old 14lb 4oz baby in the 99th percentile for her weight looks like all bundled up ready to brave the outside. I am very happy for the hoodie since hats never fit her right and make her cry and scream when I try getting them on her huge head (which for the record grew yet another inch).

I have a carving to work on, the one pictured here actually. And tonight I may pick up some linoleum at Dick Blick because I am feeling daring. I need to root around here and see if I can find the western style printmaking paper I know I should have, or if I need to buy some of that too.

Price Increase

new work in a drawer
Originally uploaded by m.Lee
Yup, it is coming and happening. I'm in the process of re-evaluating how I price and almost everything has to go up. I just need to figure out how much would make me happy and settle on that. Expect these to be in effect starting in early November.

My time has become more precious to me. This weekend I have been able to produce a lot of work and now I am exhausted completely.

Yet I know that my work is nowhere near done, just the enjoyable part. Now I have to scan everything in then open it in Photoshop, crop it, make a high resolution version to back up and a low resolution version for uploading and listing. Have I ever mentioned how slowly Photoshop runs when I am working with massive Tiff files? And how much I detest working with the program? Well, it does and I do. As I stare into my drawer full of new prints I am overwhelmed because I know how much work it is going to take to get this stuff out of the drawer for people to see. There could easily be fifty or sixty pieces here, not including the ACEOs.

One great thing out of all of them I only had two or three failures! That is a pretty good ratio.

Where to Stick them?

I have moo!
Originally uploaded by m.Lee
I actually got these the other day but neglected to mention it on my blog because I always seemed to have so much else to fill up a page. I haven't been able to bring myself to actually use one yet, no task feels moo worthy quite yet. But I am thinking when my second (free) book arrives in the next day or two I will be more prone to use them. I am interested in trading sticker pages with other people with moo stickers. Maybe along with a business card swap? I enjoyed my free 10 pack of Moo mini cards awhile back and plan on making an order of those in the fall for Christmas season promotion. The are just as eye catching as the stickers.

On the first page of the sticker book are some standard promo stickers for Moo and some of their sponsors. You had better believe that I am going to snap a picture of blee with a Moo logo sticker on her forehead. Get her on the Moo homepage!

The doctor's visit was a bit disappointing, but I haven't given up hope that I will go into labor sometime this week yet. My acid isn't completely gone but it is a lot more manageable and along with that the baby hasn't dropped completely but she isn't high up either. Steps are certainly happening to get this party started. Saturday would be a good day. I do find it funny that no matter how scared of giving birth and of having a tiny baby to care for I am, and believe me I am, I am just so physically drained from this pregnancy that I welcome it all. I am so done with being pregnant at this point. It hasn't been 100% terrible but I want my body back now please. Right now I am getting some relief due to the acid reflux leveling out a bit. Before it seemed like no matter what I did to prevent it I would be up all night in serious acid pain, but now as long as I watch what I eat and what time I eat it I am actually able to sleep through the night. Last night I was asleep before midnight and it was just glorious!

The photographer from the Globe for the Daily Candy spot was over yesterday shooting photos of me in my studio. I think it went well, he was very nice while being very much the professional and he set me at ease for the photos. The whole time I had to lock Maeby up in the living room and she whined and whined like the big baby she is. She loves new people and wanted to check things out and get in the way so badly. He seemed to get a lot of shots of this piece, too bad promoting it is useless since it sold that day! Makes me tempted to push myself to print more of that dancing lady design instead of carving today. I will see how I feel after I get a few orders packed up. The upside of carving versus printing is I should be able to manage it sitting down so it isn't nearly as physically taxing as printing. The downside being it is unlikely that block will be finished anytime soon. But I still do need to take it easy and not get ahead of myself and go back to pushing myself into exhaustion. My blood pressure isn't exactly good and I also have a bit of a head cold.

I goofed up and thought my Showcase date was today when it was actually yesterday. I did get a sale, but I have no idea if it had anything to do with being on Showcase or not. If I had known I would have rotated my featured items up a bit. Oh well. Sales are great to have, but currently not super high on my mind. Getting this baby out and being prepared for it is tops.

so much, so much

Masked Beauty

First I want to apologize if I am slow or unresponsive to comments. If I am not saying much on the blogs that I am still reading it isn't because I don't care it is just extra hard right now. Blogging is hard. Making art is pretty much impossible. Uploading and listing is difficult. Everything is just harder now and I read things in a bit of a haze so it is hard for me to get worthy words out for a comment.

Also, I've been a bad feedback leaver on Etsy. Again, getting words out is difficult. I'm not withholding on purpose I just think the way my brain is right now if I were to leave feedback it would be nonsensical or worse something like "A++++ buyer" ebay style. And who wants that?

I am writing this entry on Monday night because I know that I won't be able to write in the morning. I have an appointment with a midwife at 8:40am that should be quite revealing on how far along I am. The way I am feeling and how my body is acting I would not be surprised if she came this week or next at the latest. *Pregnancy TMI and whine alert* Meanwhile my midwife is putting me through hell running all these tests to find a reason to induce me (my theory at least). But I don't think I am going to need to be induced because I feel close. But she is going through my body with a fine tooth comb trying to find something wrong enough and putting me through hell in the process. Getting my blood drawn over and over. Being hooked up to an uncomfortable machine for 30 minutes and being told to relax. And now a 24 hour urine test today. Oh what fun this has been! I was completely happy with my care until my blood pressure became elevated and now I am very unhappy. I don't feel like I am being listened to or understood. She seems to think that the urine test is no big deal and was shocked that I made a face when she told me about it. Having done it I can most certainly has been a big deal. My body is being run through with a fine tooth comb trying to find something wrong enough to warrant an early induction.

While all this is happening I am feeling a lot of movement, contractions and pains that lead me to believe that the end is near. I'm thinking about things like how to handle my shop when the baby comes. Getting out orders that I have now. Thank you cards for all the gifts and well wishes. Stuff like that. The Boston Globe postponed the photoshoot so it is happening on Tuesday now. And I still have to tidy up my studio for it. I actually have my first Showcase Spot purchased for Wednesday and I don't even know if I am going to be wanting sales come Wednesday! I never get those advertising spots, but I was feeling motivated to promote myself in new ways a few weeks ago when they went on sale and thought that having a spot in August (a traditionally slow sales time) would be good. It didn't occur to me that come August I could be in a position where sales are of very little concern to me. Should I even be listing at this point? My mind is everywhere and nowhere and this piece just feels very appropriate right now. Something about the mood and the looks on the faces.

My acid reflux appears to not be an issue anymore. I wonder if the baby has dropped and therefor relieved some of the pressure on my stomach and esophagus.. I have such mixed emotions on this. Mostly relief and I hope this is the case but I also know that if it is I am soon going to experience the pain of childbirth followed by the scary reality that we are responsible for a tiny, helpless human life. And there are things that I wanted to do around the house beforehand that we haven't gotten to yet.

Apparently I am Trendy!

Two Russian Dolls
Originally uploaded by m.Lee
Squeee! My Russian Nesting Dolls were featured on Modish yesterday! This is my second time on them and the first in a number of months and it is always a thrill and an honor since it is such a nice blog that features such awesome indie items! Apparently I am part of a new trend with these spontaneously created Russian dolls! I did them on a total whim when I was pulling myself out of a productive and create drought and started doodling and I came up with these simple forms rather quickly. I wanted something simple, graphic and fun and I knew just from the doodles that it was time to start. Unfortunately I decided that since I was doing an image that was a bit different I would use wood that was too. Some of the hard solid woods that were given to me many months ago. This was carved in cherry wood, a gorgeous wood that is so much harder than shina! It was a hot day and I was not feeling the push of energy that I am feeling now so this simple carving took four times as long as it would have on shina and once it was done I was sweating and exhausted. People used to hardwoods like this complain about getting detail with a wood as soft as shina but I am so used to it that I am very good at bending it to my will. I had a very hard time bending this wood to my will! But I have this piece to show for it and am not featured on a blog. Hopefully there will be more Russian doll pieces except I have to change the elevation of my press to print it since it is twice as thick as shina and that is a hassle that makes me less likely to use it.

Yesterday was pretty cool. First the UPS fairy came with the Pack n Play and after some struggling and getting some help from some Etsy gals I managed to get it set up except for the bassinet part which has me a bit puzzled. But I am loving how it looks in that corner. Sharing such a bright and creatively inviting space with a young one makes me happy. Especially since she is my young one!

Following that shortly the UPS fairy came with my Dick Blick order. I now have some cool papers. A nifty large archival flat box for storing paper including the super cool paper I ordered. Some methyl cellulose for finally giving hanga a go and a small portfolio that matches my large one to help me not lose stuff ever again! That portfolio was my original reason for ordering but I just kept going!

Exhaustion and soreness soon followed but I was too emotionally up to sleep so I did some cleaning and opened up a profile on this promising looking site I found though a friend. I am fairly impressed with the design and overall ease of use so far.

This feature on Modish has me considering getting a holiday ad spot on the site. It isn't cheap but for Modish it could be worth it. The big question for me is if it does work will I be able to keep up? I don't know what blee is going to do to my life. Jon wants me to keep doing what I have been doing as much as I can since it is going so well and plans on helping out. But Christmas was crazy last year and this year it could easily be bigger especially if I buy a two month ad and feature. Where is my minion? Blee is gonna be way too small to be a minion for a long time and the animals are useless.

After just nearly having a heart attack searching for a sold piece (yes, the one that I just uncovered after a year of being tucked in a piece of discarded cardboard) and nearly having a freakout heart attack before finding it I realize that I have three things to focus on today and for the weekend. First, I must be a sticker making fiend. Second packing and shipping orders (including said stickers) and last but not least my artwork needs to be just as organized, nay more organized, than my studio. I have my pieces scattered about in too many random places and pieces get stuck together and I can do better. I have a plan!

Hope everybody has a great Friday and a great weekend. Saturday we spend all day at a baby birth class! Time to be terrified by learning exactly what is going to happen to me in a month.
