There was a call for models at this high end sling company in NYC that I heard about over the weekend. It was for the end of August so I knew that I was entering late and my chances were slim. But it was an excuse to get nice photos taken.
Well as soon as the skies cleared for a brief moment my friend with a D-SLR camera went out with me and took some photos. Among around 300 there were about 10 or 12 good ones and this spectacular one. (I need to start saving for a D-SLR as of yesterday)
Of course as soon as we get home an email is waiting for me saying that the modeling positions are full at this time. That they would love to use my photos in their gallery and will keep me in mind for the future. But no free expensive Psling for me this month. That is okay, could it possibly get any better than this one that I already have? I like this photo a lot.
I'm still listing new art on Etsy at a somewhat sluggish pace considering how much I have to put up. The custom and another order have been mailed out and I'm not quite sure what to do with myself artistically. When in doubt cut collage paper or tear printmaking paper. Or maybe even do some carving! I have a block I need to finish. Sketching sounds good too.
Oh and did I mention that blee is finally crawling? Eep! Now the fun really begins.

My Art Groove
I can't sleep so here I am making a hopefully quick blog post after dusting off the Wacom tablet and doing a little sketching. A sketch that I added to my sketch collection on Flickr.
Both blee and I are still a bit sick so I am going to try and get back to sleep and take it easy today. Getting back into the swing of things slowly.
Done this week:
1) Made this new ACEO/ ATC
2) Finished carving
3) Hung art at cafe
3) Cleaned studio
4) Sketched with Wacom tablet
Things to do:
1) List ACEO/ ATC
2) Print
3) Finish hanging art
4) Tear paper
5) Keep sketching

Thirty Days of blee!
Our life has been bleetastic, bleebastic, and generally just all about blee for the past 30 days. Tonight, at 7:14pm blee will have been on the outside for thirty full days. Many of them wonderful, many of them quite difficult.
cute onesie courtesty of mamamonkey.etsy.com.
Mondays are always rough for me and yesterday was no exception. The kid is sucking me dry literally and figuratively. I nearly had a breakdown near the end and am still quite shut down and depressed. Last night was another difficult night starting around 4 or 5am. It is hard for me to know what time it is lately. Jon knew how bad I was doing and took care of her and let me sleep when I could, except for at the end when I knew he was doing badly and I took over.
The Open Studios over the weekend went so well that I ended up doing a half day on Sunday and am very happy that I did. And it isn't about the money, even though I made a good amount. But I had such a great time seeing people from last year and connecting with other artists as well as the people that came to talk to me. I had brought along one of my carved blocks and stuck up quite a few conversations about the process. People seemed pretty interested in it. Some of them bought from me, and some did not but I enjoyed it regardless of making a sale or not. And by the end of Sunday I only had a few business cards left from my stack and all my promo bookmarks were gone. I wish I had gotten Moo cards!
The weekend was dangerous because it gave me a taste of my old life, of freedom to a degree. And I realized how much I miss it. How much I want to make new work. And not just because I feel pressured to keep producing and selling but because it is something that I truly enjoy. Something that keeps me happy and sane. But currently all my free time goes into cleaning or I am so beat down tired that I can't do anything remotely productive. Yet I rarely have time to nap because she isn't down long enough during the day.
And I can't even work on art until I clean up my studio from the mess that getting ready for the Open Studios in a flurry caused. Throughout the day during blee downtime I would rush clean so I got some done, but I miss the spotless studio I had months ago. Currently it is clean enough to carve, but not to print. I do have a bit of carving to do before I can print and then I will need to clean up after that. Jon offered me some time this weekend to print but I don't feel hopeful about it. Plus the weekend seems very far away.
Look at me, feeling sorry for myself and depressed on my beautiful daughters first big milestone. Later today we go to the pediatrician for her checkup and will find out just how much of a hungry hungry hippo she has been! The big weigh in! Born at 8lbs 6oz, any bets on where she is at now?

I'm Tired
And I am not getting things done. Sleeping through the night is certainly not an option and that is to be expected. She actually does pretty well until around 5am when she is impossible to please. We really need to start going to bed earlier, but last night we had errands to run before Jon's parents arrived and got stuck in Red Sox traffic.
But not napping during the day when she sleeps, which is fairly often except for Monday which was hellish for me is just stupid on my part. But I have so much on my mind right now that I have a hard time relaxing and sleeping. Cleaning the house, the baby of course, art that I wish I was making, orders that I need to fill, dreading the stress of the JPOS this weekend and wondering if I should even do it or if I should just try and relax. But last year went so well and I did pay for my spot so it is hard to just stay home. So I am procrastinating just about everything right now.

I finished the clearing of the block and all that needs to be done now is the detail work. But my dreams of printing with it while the inlaws are here are all but dead at this point. I'm just too tired I just know I would mess it up and just wind up wasting paper and time.
I finally photographed more of the magnets and mirrors that I had made from print scraps and failures but I have no desire to put them up in my shop right now.
I'm feeling pretty frazzled and sad right now and just wish I could clear my mind while she naps so I could either rest or get one of my tasks done. I just popped some Advil so maybe my feet and back will stop hurting so much and I can do more than I have been.

My Hope
I haven't printed since the 31st of July and I am itching to soon. And I think this week may be the week for me, though probably not until Friday or the weekend. That is when Jon's parents will be here and they can help us with the baby. While she is a very good baby it is hard to find the hours that I need to print. Carving is something that I can pick up and put down at any time during the process. Printing is a little more difficult. Not impossible but I really don't want to get ink on my baby! So having enough time to clean up is pretty important to me. I might start wearing disposable gloves except my hands get so hot in them I really dislike them. Instead I have always used barrier cream which makes washing up pretty easy.
My hands are already so dry, especially my fingertips from all the hand washing and hand sanitizing I have been doing with the baby. While normally I am not really on the anti bacterial bandwagon since I do think it may lead to problems in the long run with the bacteria that can stand up to it. But with the baby it is different. When the baby went down for awhile I put on my best hand moisturizer but still my fingertips feel dry and rough. A side effect of having a baby that I never imagined. I am a printmaker and work with my hands and ink yet I have always managed to have nice hands and nails despite that, possibly because I don't use a chemical solvent.
Blee has been a wonderful baby these two weeks. We've had moments of great difficulty for us here and there but we learned from our mistakes (such as me drinking a latte bad bad no no!) and have learned what she likes. What she likes more than anything is us. Being close to us is very important to her, she is so snuggly that sometimes the best way to calm her and get her to sleep is to lie with her next to you. Sometimes Jon simply puts her in the co-sleeper on the sofa next to him while he watches TV or whatever and she's happy sleeping next to her daddy. I also learned the trick of letting her sleep on her tummy on my chest until she falls into a deep sleep then I am able to carry her over to her bassinet and put her to sleep on her back.
I hope all is well and that this week will be a good week for us and for everybody I know. I know that I have been in a bit of a cocoon lately but I do try and catch up with people when I can. Speaking of catching up I have a couple of emails that I should reply to.

Finally some Me Time!
The ultimate me time for me is working on art. And after a very difficult day yesterday where I got my first taste of baby blues I was able to have some of that much needed time today.
Blee went down for a nap around 10:30 and she is still sleeping. I used about an hour and a half of that time to work on carving this block that I hadn't been able to work on since August 21st and I think I made some significant progress. My goal was to get half of the negative space cleared out and I got a little more than that done. I haven't yet showered but who needs to shower when all you want to do is make art?
I realize that If I can get an hour or two in the next days I could actually get this block finished by the time my inlaws come at the end of next week and before the JP Open Studios. Having them around makes it much more likely that I will be able to take a couple of hours in my studio to print. And having new work for the Open Studios would be fantastic!
Now I will go shower. Oh wait, blee rises! Maybe later!

His Final Days as the Baby
I actually had to put something in the bouncy seat for the baby just to keep this little guy from crawling into it. Cute as it is seeing him in it he needs to be kept out of the babies things because soon he will not be the baby anymore. I got him in June of 2000 and he has been with me through a lot and boy is he one moody little guy! But I love him and I hope he handles the adjustment well. Especially since now he is the only cat we have left. Burrito would have been fine with the baby, she was always rather indifferent to changes as long as she had the back of a sofa to sit on she was happy.
I'm ready to have my body back. I know that the labor will probably break my body even worse, but at least then I can start the healing process. Right now I just feel stuck. The idea that I could actually print yesterday was such a pipe dream! It wasn't hot like it is today so I started tidying my studio so I could either print or carve. My press had some junk on it that had to go and so did my desk. After about fifteen minutes of this I was completely exhausted, my hips and back were killing me and my joints hurt. Even sitting wasn't good enough, I needed to lie down. It is very frustrating to say the least. And i feel so guilty for being such a slacker.
Today is my last appointment with the midwife. I'll get checked out to see if I am any further along but I doubt it. Since my midwife Lara wasn't on the schedule I probably won't see her again until after I have had the baby. But the other midwife I have taken a real shining too will be inducing me on Monday so all is not lost.
Today is Jon's last day at work before he takes leave for the baby! At the latest even with a difficult labor we should have her by Tuesday! I get chills thinking about it! We will use these last two days to go over the house for any final preparations and then on Sunday we go in to get things started. I could go into labor then but most likely I will go home to sleep then come back in on Monday for an inducement.
I hope everybody has a great weekend! I will keep things updated as much as possible! Expect baby pictures soon!

The Weekend is Over
It has been so weird not listing anything new for these weeks that the other day I broke down and listed this piece. It is the final pine cone piece I have made. Not the final one period, just the last one that I will probably have for awhile so I figured I should at least get this one up! Making my shop virtually dormant and not listing pieces that I have does feel strange even if it does make sense. I mean the only time I have taken a break since I started in January 2006 was when I was so sick I didn't have anything new to put up. This time it is different. Before I was sick and had nothing, now I have plenty but I am distracted and disconnected. First from baby anticipation and now with this added sadness from our huge loss. But the loss makes me want to do something to distract myself.

I would like to thank everybody for being so wonderfully supportive during this incredibly difficult weekend. Your support really did make a difference in getting us through the days and both of us appreciate it greatly. Even though she was a sick kitty and had been for a long time, this sudden and dramatic turn really caught us off guard. Putting her to sleep yesterday morning was probably the most difficult thing either one of us have ever done. We stayed with her until she was completely sedated. Jon held her in his arms while the sedative took effect so that was her final memory and we feel good about that. On Saturday more than anything I just wanted the day to pass without me going into labor (for once I didn't want it) because I knew that not only would any delay cause her more pain but she was doing so bad and getting worse so fast she could have died during the wait. And her dying in the corner behind the sofa is now that we wanted while I am having my baby! Thank God she got to have some dignity and plenty of love during her final moments. But our time with her was just too short. We're still in shock from it all. The first picture is the last picture I took of Burrito and the second one is the fat and rolly polly happy kitty we would like to remember her as.
Now that ordeal is over with we would really like to welcome the new baby! She will be a week overdue as of tomorrow and as a result we have an ultrasound and destress test scheduled at the hospital on Tuesday morning. They do this every time a woman goes a week overdue to make sure the environment is still safe for the baby, because that becomes an issue with pregnancies that go over term. Since my blood pressure has dropped and stayed stable I am no longer considered high risk and cannot be induced until I hit 41 weeks, but they will not let me go past 42 weeks. I don't want to be having this baby into September! It's okay that she decided not to be a Leo but to be a Virgo instead, but September? If I haven't had the baby when I get the ultrasound I may see if I can schedule an induction that day instead of waiting for my appointment with the Mid Wife on Friday the 31st. It is starting to feel like this baby isn't real and that she is never coming out. Sure she kicks the crap out of me on a nightly basis just to remind me of her realness, but come out already!
If I am feeling up to it and I can get the studio a reasonably cool temperature I am going to try and do some sitdown carving today. I have been so useless for weeks now and it is really getting to me. I get tired very fast. I have to try to get something accomplished, to produce something.

My Gosh!
Everybody is so baby obsessed! Not that I am at all hahah but I put up this picture on Flickr and within a couple of minutes am receiving comments not about it but about the blee. And I find out that my pregnancy buddy, the one with so much of the same pains and nearly the same due date (a few days behind) is getting induced today just after a midwife tells us that we should keep waiting. Gah!
While I know induction can be not fun I am feeling a little envious right now because I am so tired of this. Once again last night I had horrible pain that turned into contractions for hours. At times these contractions would be spaced out about every five minutes. Then they would just go away. My back hurt like crazy until around 2am when suddenly it stopped and I was finally able to get some sleep. This happens to some degree or another every night and it is driving both Jon and I crazy.
I was so pleased with myself for being able to as much done on the block as I have this past week by working in spurts on and off. All the linework around the edges of the images has been carved and the clearing of negative space has been started. It is going a lot faster than I ever expected it would in my condition. My blood may not be in this piece but certainly my sweat and tears are in it. I grit my teeth and carve until I am physically unable to anymore. I am doing a big local art fair at the end of September (hopefully) and I can't help but think how wonderful it would be if I actually had prints from this block to show then. But getting it carved and printed with this baby looming is not something I should be pressuring myself to do. It is so hard as I continue to wait for her to quit teasing me and show up. Then I can finally know just how much my life is going to change.
I'm going to try and go back to sleep. I feel awful. I was really hoping to wake up to labor pains instead of going to sleep with them. The thought of having a baby when we are both freaking exhausted is really scary. Last night during the contractions I was finding myself so tired I just wanted to have them let me sleep while doing a C section because I couldn't imagine pushing.
I love you all! xoxoxo

Weekend Plans
I hope everybody has fun stuff planned this weekend. And is able to stay cool. It is hot as heck here in Boston. My fun stuff is art and baby stuff.
After what turned out to be a very productive week I now hope to have a productive weekend filled with art and baby prep. Heck, I consider working on art as baby prep at this point. Because I am doing something that is important for me to do before the baby comes!
I finished carving the last of these four images (on two blocks) yesterday and now I am off to touch up the carving a bit, make sure there are no snaggy areas in the carving and that the areas I need deep are deep enough. Other than that they are done. Then clean off the desk which is currently a mess of woodchips and carving tools.
Once the desk is cleared I can tear my paper and I want lots of paper! Thankfully I do have a bunch that is already half done. I have some new paper that I want to try too. Hopefully I will get to printing by Sunday.
Last night I was really nervous that today was going to be ruined because my stomach was acting up and feeling acidic. I was exhausted but didn't go to sleep until around 2am because of the pain and fear. But it had settled down enough at that point and I slept very well. I'm not even all that sore like I was yesterday morning. We both slept in and as I rose Jon leaned over and rubbed my back. I feel very motivated to get stuff done today after a good night's rest.
This weekend is important for us to do stuff around the house. My baby shower is next Saturday. Boy has that really snuck up on me! It looks like two of my best friends will be coming from NYC for it and I am excited. I'm excited to see everybody that will attend. Many of them have not seen me since I got huge.

Must not procrastinate
Things I need to do today!
1) finish packing up orders.
2) pick out the reserved stickers for a customer and list them on Etsy for her.
3) clear off work desk
4) do some carving. I have one block started and one idea in my head that I would like to get to.
5) do laundry
6) figure out what to do for dinner that won't make me ill
7) ship orders
8) clean up whatever mess I make carving so my studio stays pretty
What I want to do
1) stare off empty headed into space
2) nap
3) take a cold shower
4) soak feet
5) keep feet up (hard to carve or print with feet up!)
6) receive foot and back rubs
Ugh! Sooooo tired. No brainpower or energy left in this sore and broken body
